Welcome

to my personal blog. Here I post examples of my photography and writing. I specialize in making unique and highly detailed photographs. Notice I said making and not taking. Yes I take photos but a lot of time and work is involved in pushing and punishing the pixels in my images to achieve the look I like.

Please feel free make comments about any of my words or photos. I enjoy constructive critiques, learning about locations to shoot or photography techniques. Click on the "Share Article" link to share any of my photos via Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Want to use one of my posts in your own blog? No problem, but please make sure it links back to the original post here and do the right thing and give me credit. Don't copy my words, crop the images, remove the watermarks or claim my work as your own. This has happened more times than I can count so I've had to report copyright violations to ISP's and regrettably the violators blog is usually taken down.

Can't we all just get along?

Under Your Wing

Under Your Wing, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

The US Navy's RA-5C Vigilante aircraft has a giant wing. I was hiding from the sun here for a while so I decided to lay down and take a photo. Some smart ass kids asked If I had fallen and couldn't get back up. I regained my feet rapidly and towered over them not saying a word. They left immediately. Little yuppie larvae.

Dessert at the Prado in Balboa Park

If you asked Kathy what our favorite dessert is, I'm convinced she would answer "Creme Brulee" without hesitating a second. It wasn't always that way. When we were dating, we went to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and I ordered a Creme Brulee for us to share. She promptly told me "I don't like custard" and I of course told her that this was not custard and she should try it becasuse it's delicious. She then told me "I'm not putting that crap in my mouth" which made me laugh. She did finally try it and the next time we went to Ruth's Chris, she said "Should we get a Creme Brulee for each of us?"

Easter Lillies

Easter Lillies, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

The conservatory of flowers in San Diego's Balboa Park featured some beautiful easter lillies. I decided to try using my lensbaby to take the shot and moved the focus sweet spot to the right side of the frame.

Oscar's Nomad

Oscar's Nomad, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

This 1957 Chevy Nomad was my absolute favorite car from the Uptown Whittier Car Show for 2 years in a row. I had never been fortunate enough to meet the owner but I did drop my business card in the car which features an image of the car itself. I had to work late on Friday so I ended up meeting Kathy and my nephew Santino at the Rubys Car Show a little late. After sneaking up behind me and kicking me in the butt, Kathy told me that the Nomad I liked so much was at the show. After having a quick bite to eat we walked over and met the owner who was very cool. I got a few more shots and this one of them. I'm sure I'll be posting more soon.

Keeping up with Kathy

Keeping up with Kathy, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Ok so I've noticed when my wife Kathy and I go to car shows together, she gets her camera setup, mounts it on her tripod, attaches her off camera shutter release, gets her expodisc looped around her neck and has finished photographing her first car before I even start opening my backpack. Now, I'm not implying she rushes around taking snapshots. Far from it. Her images are amazing. See for yourself. I just think she's way more efficient than I am when making images. Realizing this, I decided to challenge myself a bit. I took my Lensbaby Composer with me to this car show. It requires that I manually set the focus and exposure before taking the HDR sequence. I think this helped me concentrate a bit more and I ended up shooting more cars than I usually do. Unfortunately due to that concentration I met fewer people which is a bummer. I'll have to learn to strike a balance!

Sundowners

Sundowners, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Another Wednesday evening at the drive-in. The sun was going down fast by the time I got a chance to make an image of this amazing car. The owner walked up and asked if I was "filming" his car. I said no since I was making images. He jumped in and left almost immediately afterward.

It would be mine

It would be mine, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Ok I like making images of classic cars but I don't really want one... Well I didn't until I saw this cool red coupe. Now if money wasn't an object, and if my wife didn't object... I might not either. Hmmmm. Look at me, look at me!

Mercury Eight

Mercury Eight, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

This big classic car had a really interesting grill. I'll bet it weighs 500 lbs.

Hey there Bright Eyes!

Hey there Bright Eyes!, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

This was interesting and quite unexpected. Can anyone guess what this thing is? I made this image at the Hooters car show in El Toro, California. The Hooters girls were running around being all hooteriffic. I declined taking any pictures of them, although a couple did ask. Not sure what purpose they actually serve at the show. I did see some comparing who's butt was hanging out of their orange shorts more. Whatever. Anyway, I saw this very interesting object and decided to take a few shots. Any guesses as to what this thing was attached to?

It's another Pasadena sunrise

I had just left home and was driving to work. It was still dark but I could see a reddish glow on the eastern horizon so I decided to return home to get my camera and tripod. There had been a few spectacular sunrises earlier in the month and I was hoping to capture one. When I arrived at work the entire sky was ablaze with color. I had decided I would try to make an image of the Pasadena skyline from the 10th floor of the building I work in. This is one of the photos I made. The domed building is Pasadena's City Hall. I wish I had offset it a bit to take advantage of the rule of thirds but like they say, rules are meant to be broken.
